Penpedairheol rally driver Aaron Jones got the new season off to a flying start, finishing sixth overall at the Rali Cwm Gwendraeth.
Having won the Class Two title of the 2016 Welsh Tarmac Rally Championship in August last year, Aaron and co-driver Owen Evans lined up at Pembrey, Carmarthenshire, on the weekend of February 4 looking to defend their championship.
Pairing up once again in their Honda Civic Type R – which was upgraded over the winter break – a wet and cold start to the first day saw the duo start at their best ever seeding of tenth.
Aaron said: “Right from the first stage we knew we had to push hard and try and gain an advantage with my local knowledge of the track.”
Some clever driving saw the pair finish 30 seconds quicker than their nearest class rival, and secure seventh overall.
As the day went on, many cars retired from crashing or getting stuck in the slippery, muddy conditions, but the pair pushed hard to stay on track.
After five stages and over 50 competitive miles, the pair finished with their best ever result, finishing sixth out 52 starters, and first in Class Two. They took maximum points in both class championship and the FMP Rally Challenge.
Aaron added: “To go with our success at the first round, we are looking for any potential sponsors to help us and advertise on the car or website for the year.
“If you are interested or know someone who might be, please contact use on our Aaron Jones Rallying Facebook page.”
