A teenage taekwondo hopeful claimed two bronze medals at an international tournament in Liverpool last month.

Angel Pope, 17, fights out of Nelson and was competing as part of the Welsh squad at the 2017 European ITF Taekwondo Championships at the end of April.

Held at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, the annual tournament was the largest to date, with over 800 competitors from 32 countries taking part.

Overall, the 32-strong Welsh team won two gold medals, four silver medals and eleven bronze, winning hauls in every age category.

Angel won bronze medals in both the sparring and team pattern events, and has been competing for over ten years, including in Greece and Italy.

Elsewhere, Clare Matthews, from Cardiff, was crowned overall champion in the veteran category, adding the trophy to her gold and silver medals.

The 2017 competition saw the introduction of having two ‘best’ competitors in each division.
