Members of Islwyn Running Club who took on one of the toughest marathons in Europe have made their club proud, according to its chairwoman.
The club was represented by 21 runners at the Marathon Eryri in Snowdonia on Saturday, October 28, with each completing the challenging race.
Now in its 35th year, the marathon sees participants take in the stunning scenery surrounding Wales’ highest peak with a total climb of 838 metres over the 26 mile course.
Islwyn RC chair, Suzanne Davidson, spoke of her pride at the runners’ achievements, having completed the course for a third time herself.
She said: “We are a growing club with over 200 members so it’s really impressive to have so many go up and represent the club. We had people travel up to support from the sidelines too, which was fantastic.
“I’m incredibly proud of the runners and for all to complete the course was a great achievement.
“There were tough conditions out there. It was completely foggy and you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face at times, but we always have people with a keen interest in running this race.”
Russell Wareham was Islwyn’s first male to cross the line, in 3:33, while Tara Hurley was first female home in 3:50.
Club member Carl Johnson said: “It was my first marathon and what a tough one. I’m so happy to finish with my two boys running next to me.”
Another, Jason Dixon said: “One of the best and hardest marathons in Britain, all our runners and those who travel to North Wales to support should be immensely proud of themselves.”
Siân Johnson added: “Loved every minute and can’t wait to go back and do it all again next year.”

Well done to all those who participated.
I watched the marathon on TV – it’s a gruelling course over mixed terrain – certainly not for the faint hearted.
