Students organise new football tournament for Caerphilly County Borough schools

A football cup tournament organised by four university students has been held for the first time to much acclaim.

The inaugural Caerphilly County Borough Cup was held on March 28 at the University of South Wales Sports Park in Treforest.

Caerphilly town’s Plas-y-Felin Primary School were the first winners, with Abertridwr’s Ysgol Ifor Bach runners-up.

More than 120 pupils from 12 schools across Caerphilly county took part in the tournament.

The schools taking part were The Twyn School,Bedwas Juniors,Plas-y-Felin Primary,Coed-Y-Brain Primary, Hendredenny Primary, Nant y Parc Primary School, Ysgol Ifor Bach, Ysgol y Castell, Fochriw Primary, Idris Davies School 3 to 18, Hengoed Primary and Bryn Awell Primary.

Organiser Ben Dudley, who is studying for a football coaching and development degree at the University of South Wales, said: “Our sole aim was to increase participation in football across Caerphilly County Borough.

“This was a university assignment but as I’m a local grassroots coach and also a Caerphilly resident, we wanted to put on a fantastic event for the local children in our communities and provide them with a fun footballing day.

“We had medals for every child that attended and also two amazing trophies for first and second place – the medals and trophies were kindly donated by Sport Caerphilly.

“The standard of football played was outstanding and the children’s behaviour was incredible.”

The students are now planning for the Caerphilly County Borough Cup 2019.
