A Caerphilly councillor has made it through to the next stage of a golf competition.

Steve Kent, who represents Plaid Cymru in St Martins, sailed through the first stage of qualification for the American Golf UK Long Drive Championship at a local qualifying competition held at the Cardiff American Golf store.

Taking part in the Over 45s category, Cllr Kent went through with a drive of 377 yards.

He is the 2015 winner and a three-time finalist at the American Golf UK Long Drive Championship and hopes to improve his performance to reclaim the title in this year’s competition. Alongside Cllr Kent, Jack Gavin also qualified from the Cardiff Store in the Under 45’s category, completing the local contingent that will progress to take on the region’s best at Ageas Bowl American Golf store in Southampton for a place in the national final.

The local duo are now just one step away from the UK final and a chance to win a spot at the 2018 World Long Drive Championship in Oklahoma.
