Bargoed scored five tries as they earned a bonus-point win away to Cross Keys on Saturday, August 14.

The visitors came away from Pandy Park with a 33-13 win in the WRU National Championship Cup.

It was the Bulls’ second win in the competition, having defeated Bedwas at Bargoed Park the previous weekend.

Bargoed winger Steff Thomas opened the scoring in the first half with a try which was converted by Steff Jones.

However, the side was dealt a blow in the 22nd minute when winger Adam Jones went off injured. He was replaced by Dylan Williams.

The Keys got back into the game and closed Bargoed’s lead to just a point after Curtis Povey slotted two penalties between the posts.

But Bargoed soon crossed the try-line again, with centre Darren Humphries extended his side’s lead. Steff Jones converted to increase Bargoed’s lead to eight points.

Bargoed grabbed their third try of the afternoon shortly after, with hooker Wade Langley breaching the try-line after a driving lineout.

Steff Jones converted his third kick of the game to extend Bargoed’s lead to 21-6 – with the game remaining at that scoreline until after the second half.

The visitors returned to the field after the break looking to grab their fourth try and secure a bonus-point.

Despite injuries to try-scorer Humphries and Ashley Gibson early in the second-half, Bargoed clinched the bonus-point after the hosts were reduced to 14 men.

Capitalising on the extra player, Steff Jones scored Bargoed’s fourth try after an attack from deep.

Bargoed now had a 20-point lead despite the conversion attempt being missed.

A fifth try followed after substitutes Rhys Humphries and Dylan Williams set up James Leadbeater to cross the line.

Steff Jones added the extras from the kicking tee to give Bargoed a 33-6 lead.

Reluctant to accept defeat, the Keys continued to battle on. Centre Adam Tetley scored their first try of the game, with Povey scoring the conversion to cut Bargoed’s lead back down to 20.

After the game, Bargoed coach Mike Pugsley said: “We know it’s a tough place to come and the boys worked hard and deserved the victory.

“We are pleased with the result and the way that we played for large parts of the game, but we need to be more accurate as we missed a couple of opportunities.

“However on the whole it was an improvement on last week.”
