Around one in ten adults in health board area yet to be vaccinated

Around one in ten adults living in the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board are yet to have at least one coronavirus vaccine dose.

In total, 11% are yet to have a single dose, while 5% have had one dose but are yet to have their second.

The lowest take-up is among the 18-29 age category, where 79% of of people have had at least one vaccine dose, while 66% are double-jabbed.

Of those aged 65 and over, 96% have had at least one jab while 95% are fully-vaccinated.

Councillor Shayne Cook, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Social Care, urged people to get vaccinated.

He said: “Overall vaccination uptake has been very good and the whole process from start to finish has been a success story.

“However, there is still some hesitancy within the 18-29 age category even though Covid-19 can still affect this age group through hospital admissions and Long Covid.

“I encourage those who have not had their first vaccine to attend the walk in vaccination centres that have been set up across Gwent.’’   

A walk-in vaccination centre will be operating at Newbridge Leisure Centre between 8.40am and 4pm on Tuesday, August 17, with anyone aged 18 and over still waiting for a first dose, as well as those who had their first dose of the Pfizer vaccine on or before June 21 and has yet to have their second dose.

All over-18s in Wales had been offered a coronavirus vaccine by the middle of June.

Across the health board area, which includes Caerphilly County Borough, as well as Newport, Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen and Monmouthshire, 84% of adults are fully-vaccinated. In total, 845,125 vaccine doses have been issued to people living in the health board area.

Meanwhile, 16 and 17-year-olds are now being invited for their vaccinations.

The health board has urged people in this age group not to contact them to request an appointment.
