Investigation into bluebell field destruction underway

An investigation into the “wanton destruction” of a bluebell field near Llanbradach is underway, Caerphilly County Borough Council has confirmed.

Councillor Colin Mann, who represents Llanbradach on Caerphilly County Borough Council, and community councillor Beci Newton, have both called for action to prevent further damage.

According to Cllr Mann, there have been unauthorised excavations on the field, which is to the east of Pandy Lane opposite the Cwm Glas estate.

In a letter to NRW, Plaid Cymru councillor Mann wrote: “The area is one where traditionally a very large number of native bluebells have grown and these are very much appreciated by residents in the vicinity.

“I believe that these plants are a protected species. It would seem that this work is being done without any planning permission from Caerphilly County Borough Council.

“Could you investigate this issue as a matter of urgency with a view to preventing any further destruction of this valuable flora?”

Cllr Mann added: “I’ve been told that the land was sold privately a few months back. The area is in the Bedwas and Trethomas ward but because of its location impacts on many more people living in Llanbradach.

“This area is much loved by many in the village and it is really sad to see the shocking destruction,” he added.

Meanwhile, Cllr Newton, who is also Plaid, recalled her childhood memories of visiting the field and said: “This wanton destruction of an area of unmatched beauty is absolutely devastating.

“I cannot think of another field that has a blanket of bluebells like it. It truly is difficult to work out what sort of person would wilfully destroy something so special.” 

Kate Rodgers, Environment Team Leader for Natural Resources Wales, said: “We’ve been made aware of a number of reports this weekend, of concerns over work that is being carried out to the east of Pandy Road in Llanbradach, Caerphilly, known locally as Bluebell Woods.

“Our officers are supporting Caerphilly Country Borough Council who are likely to be leading the investigation.”

A spokesperson for Caerphilly County Borough Council said: “We can confirm that concerns have been raised with the council and officers are currently investigating the matter.”

It is understood the works have stopped pending a full investigation.

A meeting to discuss the matter will be held at Llanbradach Community Centre at 7pm on Wednesday, August 3.

Caerphilly Senedd member Hefin David has also received complaints and will be attending the meeting on Wednesday.

He said: “I’ve been in touch with NRW and Caerphilly Council planning department, who now tell me that the work has been halted following an officer visit to the site.

“I will be attending a public meeting this week to chat with local residents on the matter and will continue to liaise with the relevant parties, including the head of construction who were carrying out the works.”
