New darts youth league is aiming for the future

A Caerphilly pub is looking to find the next Gerwyn Price after setting up a new darts youth league.

Shaun Begley, landlord of the Pontygwindy Inn, believes the darts scene in the area has never been stronger.

However, he is concerned over the future of the game. Speaking to Caerphilly Observer, Mr Begley said: “We want to help nurture a new generation of darts players.

“There isn’t anything for kids in the area and I’ve already spoken to a couple players who are interested. This will hopefully lead to them joining our senior sides in the future.”

Since taking over the pub a year ago, Mr Begley said he has spent thousands on the interior of the pub, including on the “state-of-the-art darts facilities”.

Due to this investment, the pub now boasts four separate darts teams, with more than 30 players playing in various leagues each week.

“We’re trying to change the cliché of what a darts player looks like and make it more of an inclusive game,” said Mr Begley.

“We already have someone with a disability who is keen to play, plus darts is a great way to improve your maths skills.”

He added: “I’m meeting the Welsh Darts Organisation soon to finalise the league details and get things rolling. In the mean time we’re looking for sponsorship and obviously players.”

The youth league itself will be for youngsters aged between eight and 16, with safety measures in place, such as a shorter dartboard.

From a players point of view, Jack Sargeant, who plays for The Station Inn pub in Caerphilly, believes this can only be a step in the right direction for darts. He said: “When I was starting out 15 years ago, I never had this kind of opportunity.

“When I did get to compete it would have to be against grown men who didn’t really care much about my development.

“This will help youngsters build confidence, make contacts in the industry, but most importantly make some friends.”
