Phillipstown is getting new classes that will give every child ‘the chance to dance’.
DYT dance school, which has a studio in Blackwood, is starting weekly street dance lessons in Phillipstown Community Centre.
Project leader Lisa Everson explained to Caerphilly Observer how DYT (Do Your Thing) dance school is a little bit different.
“We give everyone the chance to dance,” said Lisa. “It’s really open and friendly.”
The classes start on February 19 and will run every Sunday. There are two sessions, one for children between the ages of three and six and another for those aged seven and above.
There is no uniform requirement. Children can wear comfortable clothes and shoes, which helps make the classes as inclusive as possible, according to Lisa.
She said: “We focus heavily on the wellbeing side, providing the opportunities for the children to be themselves.”
It doesn’t matter if the children get a routine wrong, according to Lisa. It’s not all about trophies but seeing improvements in other ways – like in a child’s confidence.
“I think the big benefit is the confidence the kids get,” said Lisa.
In a Facebook review for the school, one parent wrote: “My daughter started at the Blaina classes and she loves it, she struggles [at] times with nerves and confidence but everyone has been nothing but warm and welcoming.
“I can’t wait to continue to watch her confidence grow in a friendly professional environment. You all do a great job.”
Lisa also ensures that class prices reflect the school’s dedication to inclusivity with DYT classes starting at £2.50 a session.

She said: “The fees we charge for our classes are very, very low,” adding that this helps during the current cost-of-living crisis and also means parents may be able to afford more than one hobby for their children.
DYT also runs other classes including a drama club, urban cheerleading sessions and an Additional Learning Needs (ALN) and disability dance class.
With a small number of teachers, the school relies “very heavily on volunteers”, Lisa admitted.
As the new classes start in Phillipstown and continue in the Blackwood area, Blaina and Pontypool, Lisa may have to wait to find extra help before expanding further.
However, it’s clear she finds happiness in what the school already brings to children, families and the community.
“I think what we do is great,” said Lisa, “it’s worth more than any million pound salary.”
Street dance classes will start at Phillipstown community centre on February 19 and prices start at £2.50. Contact DYT dance school to register.
