The UN has praised the Welsh Government’s LGBTQ+ action plan

The Welsh Government has been praised by the United Nations for its LGBTQ+ action plan.

The plan, which was launched earlier this year, aims to strengthen the understanding of LGBTQ+ people’s rights.

It follows on from the Welsh Government’s commitment to make Wales the most LGBTQ+ friendly country in Europe, and includes aims to improve representation, inclusion and participation of LGBTQ+ people in sports.

The praise came after the UN’s independent expert on sexual orientation and gender identity visited the UK.

Hannah Blythyn, the Welsh Government’s deputy minister for social partnership, said: “We want to see a Wales where everyone is able to live their lives as their authentic selves, free from fear and discrimination.

“As a government we’re committed to championing and supporting inclusivity – within our cultural life, in our communities and throughout our country.”

Ms Blythyn added: “The UN praise for our LGBTQ+ action plan and ambition to become the most LGBTQ+ friendly nation in Europe is humbling but I very much recognise there remains work to be done and that Pride events still have an important part to play across our nation.

“Sadly, LGBTQ+ people continue to face attacks globally, especially transgender women and girls and our rights are at risk of being rolled back.”

On Saturday June 24, Caerphilly town will host its first ever Pride event.

Pride Caerffili, which is being organised by Caerphilly County Borough Council, will be a day-long celebration to recognise LGBTQ+ people’s contribution to society.

The “family friendly” celebrations will take place on June 24, from 12pm until 7pm and will include live entertainment and an “iconic” Pride parade.

It comes a week after Pride Cymru returns to Cardiff on Saturday June 17 and Sunday June 18.
