A singer from Caerphilly has released her first song during Pride Month to celebrate her LGBTQ+ community.

Becky Winfield released her debut single, Not Friends Anymore, inspired by the true story of how she fell in love with her friend turned partner, Sophie Pryce.

Becky spoke to Caerphilly Observer about the song, which has been played on BBC Radio Wales and Radio Cardiff. She said: “It’s a funny story actually. I was on a night out with some friends and one of them suggested to me that Sophie fancied me.

“We hit it off straight away and within a year we had our first child, Theo, who I carried. Now three years later and Sophie is carrying our next baby boy.

“After telling my story to a production company they said that would be a great idea for a song and here we are.”

Growing up, Becky, who works in a dog day care centre, explained how she was always too nervous to perform, and that it took a while for her to find her feet in the industry.

“I was so shy as a kid – you couldn’t get me to sing to a room of people let alone a gig,” Becky said. “I did some pub stuff in the area until I met Ffion Gruffudd who ran a production company called Coco and Cwtch,” she added.

Becky continued: “She loved my voice and my story and pushed me to write music when I’d only been doing covers at that point.

“I’ve left the pub work behind and do a lot more weddings and other occasions these days. It’s been great.”

The single is the result of a collaboration between talented LGBTQ+ members of the community that produced the entire package.

Since her song came out earlier this month, the 32-year-old has been amazed by the positive reactions, with big plans announced in the future: “Everyone has been so nice and said how proud they are of me in person and on social media.

“I want to release a few more singles this year with an album set to be released next year.”

Becky’s mum, Valerie, spoke to Caerphilly Observer about how proud she is of her daughter: “It’s amazing for her and she really deserves it.

“It’s not often you see someone from Caerphilly get success like this and it’s quite a big thing for all of us. It’s also important for her that she’s doing this during Pride Month as I know that’s something very close to her heart.”

As Pride celebrations come to Caerphilly on Saturday June 24, Becky had a message to those involved: “I’m really keen to promote the LGBTQ+ community and hopefully inspire those who just want to live a normal life.

“You can get married, have kids, and still do fun things like I’m doing right now.”
