Ystrad Mynach Primary School has won a national award for environmental education.

The school are now the joint UK Champions of the Primary Awards for Green Education in Schools (PAGES) 2023.

Liberty Woodland School, London, also claimed the top spot.

The co-winning project, Making Ystrad Green, saw children try and make their school and village as eco-friendly as possible, doing weekly litter picks, planting a wildlife-attracting wheelbarrow and interviewing the caretaker to find out how they could save on electricity and recycle more.

The school, which also came first in the Green Action Takers category, will receive £1,500.

There were entries from around 40,000 children for the competition, which is for primary schools in the UK, and organised by environmental education charity the Young People’s Trust for the Environment.

Director of Young People’s Trust for the Environment, Peter Littlewood, said: “We had so many fantastic entries this year. This is the first time we have ever had joint UK Champions.

“Both schools did really different, but equally amazing projects. We debated long and hard and in the end, we thought the only fair result would be to have joint Champions.”
