Caerphilly Observer is looking for a Senedd reporter

A multi award-winning news service, Caerphilly Observer has been redefining local media since it was launched in 2009.

As a leading, independently owned and reader-focused organisation, we empower our team to do innovative and inspiring work.

Our publication has been awarded grant funding from Creative Wales to lead on an exciting new journalism project to boost coverage of the Senedd.

We are looking for a full-time reporter, to be employed on a 12-month fixed-term contract, to cover the business of the Senedd – ranging from plenary sessions to committee hearings.

The role will be predominately based at the Senedd in Cardiff for four out of five days, with one day a week at our office in Caerphilly.

Caerphilly Observer to recruit dedicated Senedd reporter after Welsh Government funding

The ideal candidate…

  • Good writing skills, up-to-date legal knowledge, 100wpm shorthand.
  • National Qualification in Journalism (NQJ) (or similar) qualification, or relevant experience as a reporter in a daily news environment and/or working to daily news deadlines is highly desirable. We will also consider applicants who hold the NCTJ diploma or a similar qualification.
  • Excellent social media skills.
  • Excellent at working under pressure and identifying priorities.
  • Be familiar with digital tools and techniques across a range of mobile devices.
  • Strong understanding of working and processes within Welsh Government and the Senedd – or a desire to learn.
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering great ideas for content.
  • Strong contact-building skills.
  • Proficiency in taking images, shooting video and gathering audio.
  • A driving licence is preferable.
