The Ynysddu ward will be moved to the new Caerphilly parliamentary constituency – something that has sparked anger from the council’s independent group leader.

Cllr Kevin Etheridge, who represents Blackwood, said he has written to the Boundary Commission for Wales about the change.

Ynysddu is currently in the Islwyn parliamentary constituency. However, constituency boundaries are being redrawn in Wales.

Initial plans drawn up by the Boundary Commission for Wales saw the Ynysddu ward form part of the new Newport West and Islwyn constituency.

However, the commission’s final plans, published last month, saw the ward form part of the Caerphilly constituency instead.

Cllr Etheridge has requested to see all the representations made to the commission suggesting Ynysddu be moved to Caerphilly.

The ward contains the communities of Wyllie, Ynysddu, Cwmfelinfach, Wattsville and Mynyddislwyn.

Despite all the changes, Senedd constituency boundaries will stay the same. This means, despite moving to Caerphilly for UK elections, Ynysddu will remain in the Islwyn Senedd constituency, which is represented by Labour’s Rhianon Passmore.
