A ‘Chairman’s XIII’ will represent Wales Rugby League away to Cumbria this autumn.

The game will kick-off at the LEL Arena, Whitehaven, on Friday October 13 and will give Wales Rugby League (WRL) a chance to mark the contribution of outgoing chairman Brian Juliff.

Mr Juliff, who had led the WRL since June 2012, stepped down from the role earlier this month, with his wife, Anne, undergoing treatment for a rare form of blood cancer.

The match also forms part of the testimonial year for former Ireland international and ex-St Helen’s star Kyle Amor, who hails from Cumbria.

The Welsh side will be coached by John Kear, who said: “Brian has been fantastic for rugby league in Wales for more than a decade and it’s a fitting way to recognise all he has done with a Chairman’s XIII for this match.

“We will pick as strong a squad as possible to reflect that and we’re sure those who come to the game will enjoy a competitive 80 minutes.

“Kyle has enjoyed a stellar career and I’m sure Cumbrians will come out in good numbers to acknowledge all he has achieved.”

During his time at the helm, Juliff was involved with the development of two academies, including linking Coleg y Cymoedd, which has campuses in Ystrad Mynach and Nantgarw, with Super League outfit Salford Red Devils.

The partnership has seen several young Welsh players join Salford’s academy, with some even going on to sign first team contracts.
