A-level students across Caerphilly County Borough are receiving their exam results today (Thursday August 17).

Across Wales, the percentage of A* and A grade results received has fallen from 40.9% last year to 34%.

However, grade boundaries were set lower last year to counter the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

But, the percentage of A* and A grades achieved this year is still higher than in 2019, where 27% of grades were at that level.

AS-level, Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate, and vocational qualification learners have also been receiving their results this morning.

Coleg y Cymoedd, which has has an A-level centre in Nantgarw, has reported its best-ever exam results this year, with a record number of places secured at Oxford and Cambridge universities.

The number of A-level grades at A* or A at the college stands at 36% this year, with 86.2% of pupils earning grades between A* and C.

Jonathan Morgan, Principal at Coleg y Cymoedd, said: “The outstanding results that we have seen today, both A-level and vocational, have been achieved thanks to the hard work and commitment of learners, the dedicated expert direction of subject and course tutors, as well as the comprehensive, personalised wellbeing support that we have implemented across the board.”

Wales’ education minister, Jeremy Miles, congratulated pupils on their results and said: “We know what a challenging time this has been. Our aim in providing extra support this year was to make sure the exams were fair, despite the difficulties you’ve faced.

“For anyone who didn’t quite get the results you wanted, or you’re unsure of your next steps, don’t be too disappointed and don’t be too hard on yourself.

“There are lots of options open to you, including university clearing, apprenticeships, maybe starting your own business. Careers Wales is a great place to start for advice and your school or college will be there to support you too.”

Conservative shadow education minister, Laura Anne Jones, who represents the South Wales East region, also congratulated pupils, teachers and support staff. She said: “Students have worked exceptionally well whilst striding towards their goals. I would like to wish everyone the best of luck with whatever they choose to do next. 

“There are an abundance of options available, including university, apprenticeships and the job market. The world is your oyster.”

Caerphilly’s Labour Senedd Member, Hefin David, also offered his best wishes and said: “A big well done to each and every one of you, for all the hard work you have put in.

“If you didn’t get the results you had hoped for, there are still options out there for you. Today is just one day in the bigger picture of your life.”

GCSE results will be announced on Thursday August 24.
