Family-run builders’ merchant opens new branch in Bedwas

A family-run builders’ merchant that has been operating for more than 30 years has opened a new branch in Bedwas.

Gwillim Builders Merchant, which has been based in Brynmawr since 1992, opened its second site on Bedwas House Industrial Estate on September 4.

The independently-owned company was originally set up by Ben Gwillim and business partner Bob Bacon.
Over the years the duo built a reputation for supplying building materials, timber and landscaping products at competitive prices, with a reliable and friendly service.

Bob retired from the firm in 2012, with Ben and wife Heather taking charge and turning it into a family-run affair, building on their glowing reputation.

In 2017, Ben and Heather’s son Jack, who grew up working in the yard during the school holidays, joined the business.

His older brother Kevin joined the firm in 2020 and now the two brothers have taken on its running.

Jack, 40, said: “This is a great area. We already do quite a bit of business down here. Its proximity to Caerphilly, Newport, and Cardiff makes it the perfect location.

“The feedback we’ve had since our opening has been great.”

The premises are open to both the public and the trade.

Jack continued: “We’re very much a people business. Our customers get to know and trust us and vice-versa.

“It’s a more personal experience here than at the bigger outlets.

“We like to retain that family-friendly feel, combining it with a professional service and competitive prices.”
