A Trethomas-based charity has been awarded a £2,000 grant to help develop a bike safety workshop for young people in the area.

Toby Jones, 15, is the junior leader at the Parish Trust’s youth club, and regularly cycles 40 minutes to St Thomas’ Church in the village.

Having joined the Trust last summer as a volunteer, Toby recently submitted an application to GAVO for a grant to set-up a bike safety workshop, which will provide equipment and free helmets to those who take part.

The money will also go towards a bike repair station and new bike racks, which will be placed at the Trust’s new youth and children’s venue, Bryn Hall.

Carrie Gealy, youth and children’s programme manager, said: “This project is something that hits home for the youth club team.

“Every week we see our young people cycle to us without helmets, and know the risks of this. Toby’s passion and enthusiasm for sharing his knowledge and keeping people safe on their bicycles is an inspiration to us all.

“I’m looking forward to guiding Toby through this project and creating something meaningful and vitally important for the community.”
