Caerphilly County Borough Council is set to open its first night shelter

Following weeks of delays, Caerphilly County Borough Council has announced an opening date for its first night shelter, aimed at helping rough-sleepers.

Independent councillor for Blackwood, Nigel Dix, recently criticised the council over the delays, with promises the shelter would be open before December 2024.

The council said it had experienced “unforeseen delays”, but has today announced the shelter will be open from Tuesday January 28.

Access to the night shelter will be via referral only, and can be made no later than 3pm between Monday and Friday.

Once someone has been referred, they will not need to be referred again.

If an individual is accepted into the night shelter following the referral being received and it being agreed they can access, the council’s rough sleeping team will contact that person and discuss transport arrangements so they can get to the night shelter.

The shelter will be open from 5.30pm, with an evening hot meal, access to showers, and washing machine facilities available at the shelter .

Washing powder and personal hygiene packs will also be available. In the morning, a breakfast consisting of cereal, toast, and tea or coffee, will be provided. Those who have stayed will also receive a packed lunch for the day.

For more information, or to make a referral, call the council on 01443873552.
