A new martial arts and fitness academy has been proposed at an industrial site in Abercarn.
Rhys Price, of Ty Grapple, wants to convert a unit at the Prince of Wales Industrial Estate for the new venture, which would offer coaching and training for various martial arts, including Brazilian jiu-jitsu and judo.
According to the application documents submitted to Caerphilly County Borough Council, the premises would operate with an online pre-booking system, and classes would be limited to around 30 students.
The new venture would also include training areas, a reception, offices, storage, and shared access to the kitchen and toilets at Unit 2.
“The proposal will bring an existing commercial unit into an active community use, promoting health, fitness, wellbeing, and youth participation in organised sport,” said Mr Price in his application.
“The academy will provide a valuable local sporting facility, encouraging physical activity, personal development, and community engagement while making productive use of an existing unit within the established industrial estate.”
In a supporting statement, he said the academy would promote “discipline, wellbeing and self-defence skills”, with the potential to create local jobs and “provide a positive community resource for Abercarn and the surrounding area”.
The application is currently out for consultation, and can be viewed on the Caerphilly County Borough Council website under reference 26/0531/COU.
