Heritage organisation Cadw has proposed renovating a building in the grounds of Caerphilly Castle to serve as its regional base.

The Grove sits off Crescent Road to the northeast of the town’s famous landmark, which itself has undergone a major restoration as part of a multimillion-pound Cadw project.

The organisation has now won a bid for planning permission to restore The Grove and “enhance the character of the building in its setting”.

Built as a private home in the early 20th century, the property is in “a poor state of repair” and contains administrative offices and storage for Cadw’s conservation team.

Planning documents show the proposed works include structural repairs, a new roof, replacement doors and windows, and new insulation.

Any changes to the look of the building would be “minimal”, although solar panels could be integrated into the new roof.

In a report, Caerphilly County Borough Council planning officers judged the proposals would “restore the building, improve its energy efficiency and secure its ongoing use”.

No objections were filed during a recent public consultation period, the report adds.

The council officers granted planning permission for the restoration project, subject to conditions.
