Two new groups of buildings which will transform the skyline of Cardiff are nearing completion.

Construction work on the apartment blocks, located where the old Brains brewery site used to be, started more than two years ago.

The two complexes, made up of connected buildings of varying heights, are part of a wider Central Quay masterplan which will also see the land behind Cardiff Central station turned into offices, restaurants, bars and a hotel.

Parts of the former brewery will be kept and refurbished, like the old brewhouse and Brains chimney stack.

Head of construction delivery and design at Watkin Jones, Sean Curran, said: “Work at Central Quay is progressing as planned and the exterior panels have now been fully installed on both main buildings.

“The exterior of the smaller eight-storey block is almost finished, with final checks on the brickwork taking place soon.

“Inside, we’re making great progress too – kitchens are being fitted, lifts are going in and rooms are taking shape.

“Thanks to the hard work and coordination of the team, we’re on schedule, and work on the surrounding public spaces is also moving forward at pace.”

Cardiff Council’s planning committee approved plans for the apartment blocks at Central Quay in June 2022.

The first plot is made up of four buildings, the tallest of which is 29 storeys in height.

Similarly to the first plot, the second is made up of four buildings. However, the tallest of these is 24 storeys in height.

Plot one will include 402 apartments, 801sqm of commercial floorspace, car and cycle parking, a new square and landscaping work.

Plot two will be made up of 316 apartments and 1,319sqm of commercial floorspace. Like the first plot, it will have car and cycle parking, a new public square and landscaping work.

Demolition plan set out for ’empty and unused’ office near Caerphilly Castle

Artist impressions of what the completed site could look like show a cycle and pedestrian footbridge connecting the scheme to the other side of the River Taff.

The Central Quay scheme is one of a number of developments that have seen the area around Cardiff Central station completely transform over the past few years.

Nearby, a new multi-storey car park is being built behind the railway station.

Cardiff Central itself will undergo a multimillion-pound transformation after plans to upgrade it were approved by the council recently.
