Tour de France volunteers are known as 'Joy Makers'
Tour de France volunteers, known as ‘Joy Makers’, will be needed when Wales hosts the event

Around 1,000 volunteers will be needed when Wales hosts the Tour de France next year.

Stage three of the world-famous cycling event comes to Wales next July, starting in Welshpool, Powys, and finishing in Cardiff on Sunday July 4, 2027.

The route will take riders through some of Wales’ most challenging terrain, including climbs over the Rhigos and Caerphilly Mountain in the closing kilometres.

Anyone aged 16 and over can apply to volunteer, with no prior experience needed. Full training will be provided.

Those aged 18 to 25 will also be eligible for the Readiness to Work scheme, offering employability skills training and career-focused mentoring.

Applications are now open and close on September 1.

The Welsh Government has said it will work with the Wales Council for Voluntary Action to ensure volunteering for the tour can open doors to further opportunities across Wales.

Heledd Fychan, the Welsh Government’s culture and sport minister, said: “The Tour de France coming to Wales is a once in a lifetime opportunity. It’s our chance to build on the legacy of Geraint Thomas, inspire a new generation to get on their bikes, and show the world the very best of Wales.

“As a volunteer, you’ll help Wales share its unique ‘Croeso’ while being part of a history-making event, meeting new people, celebrating your community and developing skills to boost your employability.

“Whether you’re a seasoned volunteer or completely new, everyone is welcome. I encourage anyone interested to represent their community through the Grand Départs.”
