Newbridge RFC has paid tribute to one of its most influential figures, the late Derek Morgan, by naming a stand in his honour.
The club last month unveiled the newly named W.G.D. (Derek) Morgan Stand during a special commemorative evening, attended by members of Morgan’s family, friends and the wider rugby community.
Morgan’s wife, Ruth, eldest son Andrew, and daughter Rhian were invited to unveil the sign, joined by a small gathering of family members and friends.
The event also featured three former England and British and Irish Lions internationals – Mike Teague, Peter Winterbottom, and Dean Richards – who attended as special guests.
Following the unveiling ceremony, guests returned to the clubhouse for a meal before a Q&A session with the former internationals. The trio shared memories of Morgan and reflected on their own distinguished rugby careers.
The evening attracted a capacity audience drawn from across the Newbridge RFC family, including former players and seven former senior and B internationals.
Morgan, who passed away in 2024, was described by the club as “one of our greatest ambassadors”.
During his playing career, he represented Newbridge RFC and went on to earn recognition on the international stage, playing for England and the Barbarians. Away from the field, he enjoyed a highly successful administrative career with the Rugby Football Union – the governing body of rugby union in England – eventually serving as RFU President in 2002.
Despite later living in Northumberland, Morgan maintained close ties with the club and remained a trusted source of advice and support. Newbridge RFC said he played a major role in strengthening the club off the field.
The club described the stand naming ceremony as a fitting tribute to a man whose contribution to Newbridge RFC spanned decades, and whose legacy continues to be felt throughout the club.
