Nelson played host to the annual Euro1wall Welsh Open this month – with local competitors among the victors.

Andrew Meaney and Jamie Amos produced a tournament victory on Sunday July 19 to keep the men’s doubles trophy in Nelson.

The Welsh pair beat Conor Keenan and Brian McAleer 21-13 in the final, securing the home nation’s single title over a weekend largely dominated by Irish competitors.

Irish competitors took control of the singles competition on Saturday July 18, sweeping both finals.

In the men’s singles, Steven O’Neill defeated James Dempsey 21-10 in an all-Irish final. Caitlin Conway took the women’s singles title with a 21-12 victory against fellow Irish player Jodie Keeling.

Keeling returned to the court on the Sunday to claim the women’s doubles title alongside Aoibheann Muldoon-McGurk, defeating Amanda McGarry and Maura Creelman 21-12 in another all-Irish final.

Organisers at the Welsh Wallball Association said planning is already underway for the 2027 tournament.

Since its establishment, members of the Welsh Wallball Association have travelled the world competing in the sport, including to places like Belgium, the Netherlands, and Spain – while welcoming players from as far away as the United States and New Zealand to Nelson.

The Welsh Wallball Association has also welcomed some of the world’s best players to Nelson.

Wallball, also known as one-wall handball, is a sport that involves two people hitting a small rubber ball against a wall with their hands.
