Two Caerphilly police officers have been commended for their bravery after tackling a gunman on the Graig-Y-Rhacca estate.

PC Joanne Rowe and PC Jonathan Collier were called to the housing estate after CCTV operators spotted a man shooting an air rifle at houses.

When the officers arrived the gunman turned the rifle on PC Rowe who had to take cover behind a parked car.

He eventually ran off but both officers tracked him down and wrestled him to the floor and made the arrest.

The two officers were recently presented with Chief Constable Commendations after the incidentin February this year.

PC Rowe, 27, has been a police officer for four years and is part of the neighbourhood response team based at Blackwood.

The former Ystrad Mynach Lewis Girls School pupil said: “When I saw the man, the rifle was down at that point.

“I shouted at him to stop and he lifted it up and aimed it directly at me.

“It was my immediate instinct to jump back and I hid behind a parked car. It all happened so quick. I was frightened but the adrenalin kicks in and takes over.

“At that time I didn’t think about what was happening, but afterwards I thought I could have been shot, somebody else could have been shot.”

PC Collier, 37, who is based at Caerphilly, said: “It’s nice to be recognised for doing good work and helping the community.”

The arrested man was later jailed for 18 months for firearm offences.
