A group of school pupils have won a place at a science exhibition after an investigation into the world of make-up.

The Year 8 students, from Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni in Fleur de Lys, impressed the judges at a national science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) event – securing a place in the UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair in March.

Lowri Howard, Jodie Barnard, Amy Matthews, Beth James and Ffion Harries from Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni were crowned winners of the prestigious CREST Gold award at the Wales-wide exhibition and awards ceremony, Big Bang Cymru.

The team won their award for their Mascara Investigation project, which focused on the science behind make-up.

Ray Collier, Chief Executive of Careers Wales who organised Big Bang Cymru said: “STEM subjects have long been identified as a key factor to ensure that Wales has the skills to forge a sustainable economy for its future, and events like Big Bang Cymru are evidence that our students are brimming with extremely intelligent, well thought through and truly inspiring ideas.

“The attendance at Big Bang Cymru has been exceptional and the level of attention to detail in each of the projects has been highly commendable. I am confident that students will have been excited and enthused by Big Bang Cymru, and as Wales’ premier STEM event it has given them an exceptional opportunity to show what they can do and gain confidence in their abilities.”
