Gwent Police Authority, which oversees the work of Gwent Police and holds it to account, has thanked residents for their support over the last 12 months.

Cilla Davies, chair of Gwent Police Authority said: “Throughout 2009 public confidence in Gwent Police steadily climbed resulting in a 7% increase by the end of the year.

“This was the biggest increase over 12 months achieved by any of the 43 police forces across England and Wales.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank members of the public for their support and to assure them that we remain committed to providing a local police service that is customer focussed and tailored to suit their needs.

“This year will no doubt bring with it some new challenges, but we will continue to work hard to fulfil our commitments set out in the policing pledge, invest in Neighbourhood Policing, listen to the concerns of residents and ensure that the service we provide tackles the issues that matter most to them.”

Gwent Police Authority is an independent body made up of 17 local people, nine councillors and eight independent members.

It is the job of the Authority to hold Gwent Police to account on behalf of local people and to set the strategic direction of local policing to ensure that everyone benefits from a better police service.
