Caerphilly AM urges schools join breakfast scheme

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 12:00, Thursday February 4th, 2010.

Caerphilly AM Jeff Cuthbert.

Caerphilly’s Labour Assembly Member Jeff Cuthbert has said he would like to see more schools in the constituency offer children free breakfasts.

Mr Cuthbert made his comments as it was announced 1,000 schools in Wales had sign up for the Welsh Assembly Government’s Free School Breakfast scheme.

He said: “It is great news that free school breakfasts are now being offered in 1,000 schools across Wales. It shows that the Free School Breakfasts scheme really is going from strength to strength.

“I’ve spoken to many local teachers who say that the scheme is having a hugely positive impact on children in Caerphilly.

“A number of local schools including The Twyn Primary School in Caerphilly town and Park Primary School in Bargoed offer the scheme and I would like to see more signing up in the future.”

Free breakfasts were introduced in September 2004 to ensure that all children in Wales started the day with a healthy breakfast of cereal, toast and a piece of fruit or fruit juice.

Other schools in the county borough to offer free breakfasts include Bedwas Infants, Cwmaber Infants, in Abertridwr, and Ystrad Mynach Primary.
