Chartist Bridge in Blackwood was closed for just over an hour on Monday night after a man threatened to jump from it.
Gwent Police was called to the incident at 5.50pm and immediately closed the road.
A police spokeswoman confirmed the 38-year-old man was successfully talked down and the bridge re-opened at 7pm.
She added the man was eventually detained under the Mental Health Act.
