Caerphilly Cheese, the best there is!

Caerphilly MP Wayne David has promised to give a piece of Caerphilly Cheese to the Speaker of the House of Commons after the delicacy was discussed during a political debate.

The cheesey subject came up in a packed House just before the Prime Minister took to the floor for his weekly question time.

Wales Office Minister Mr David was answering a question from a Conservative MP when he made reference to the crumbly dairy product.

Michael Fabricant, MP for Lichfield, questioned Mr David about the promotion of Welsh agricultural produce. Mr David took the opportunity to refer to the importance and quality of Caerphilly Cheese.

Mr David said that the promotion of Caerphilly Cheese and the annual Big Cheese Festival were excellent examples of the effective promotion of Wales.

As well as promising some Caerphilly Cheese to the Speaker of the Commons John Bercow, he also promised some to Mr Fabricant.

Answering the question Mr David sadi; “Caerphilly town and borough councils are doing their utmost to promote Caerphilly cheese. It is the best cheese in Europe, Mr Speaker, and I should be happy to give a piece to you and to Michael Fabricant.”

The light-hearted exchange between Mr David and Mr Fabricant served as an effective curtain-raiser for Prime Minister’s Questions, which followed.

PM Gordon Brown was seen to be smiling along with other Members at the banter between the Wales Office Minister and Mr Fabricant.

During the debate Mr David also revealed plans to introduce card payments on the two Severn Bridges.
