Fairtrade Fortnight has begun and a host of events are being held across Caerphilly County Borough to promote the ethical initiative.

A special Fairtrade Coffee Break will take place at Penallta House council offices in Ystrad Mynach on Tuesday February 23 between 12.15pm and 2pm.

A coffee grower from Uganda will talking to staff and councillors about the success of the Fairtrade campaign and to thank the authority for supporting it.

The Caerphilly Fairtrade Group has organised the event as part of its ongoing efforts to promote Fairtrade across the area. Caerphilly town centre has received Fairtrade Town status and the scheme is widely backed by local residents and businesses.

Staff will get the opportunity to chat to Jennifer about Fairtrade as well as sampling Fairtrade chocolate, tea and coffee.

They will also get an opportunity to join in the nation’s ‘Big Swap’ by registering online on the Fairtrade Foundation’s website.

Fairtrade Fortnight runs from today until March 7.

Caerphilly AM Jeff Cuthbert is urging people to take part in Fairtrade Fortnight.

He said: “Fairtrade is about making sure that we all play our part in encouraging sustainable development which offers better working rights and process for marginalised producers and workers in countries across the world.

“There is a lot we can do as consumers, communities and businesses and I would encourage everyone in areas like Caerphilly town, the Aber Valley and the Lower Rhymney Valley to buy Fairtrade goods wherever possible.

“I am proud that Wales became the first ever Fairtrade nation in 2008.

“Enormous progress has been made in Wales regarding Fairtrade and the Big Swap is another great way to spread the message.”
