The final countdown has begun for Wednesday’s Welsh stage of the Tour of Britain cycle race.

Caerphilly County Borough is to host the final section of stage four of the race with 96 of the world’s best cyclists, including stage one winner Mark Cavendish, expected to arrive in Nelson, from Welshpool, at about 2pm.

From there, the race goes through Ystrad Mynach, Llanbradach and Caerphilly town before the riders start the ascent up Caerphilly Mountain. The race will then come back into the town for a finish on Crescent Road.

Cllr Allan Pritchard, leader of the council is encouraging everyone to get involved by cheering on the cyclists.

He said: “We would love to see thousands of local people lining the route to cheer on the competitors.

“I would encourage everyone to go along and show their support on the day and showcase Caerphilly county borough to the millions of people who will be following this major sporting event.”

Children from six primary schools will be their bikes taking part in a special ‘Italian Pursuit’ relay competition on the finishing straight.

Schools taking part are Bedwas Juniors, Cwm Ifor Primary, Cwrt Rawlin Primary, Nant-y-Parc Primary, The Twyn School and Tyn-y-Wern Primary.

The Italian Pursuit competition will begin at 1.10pm, concluding at 2pm before a short podium ceremony for the fastest teams.
