Protests at Risca care home closure plan

About 100 protesters descended on Caerphilly County Borough Council’s headquarters to voice their anger at plans to close a Risca care home.

The Plaid-controlled council wants to close the Ty Darran care home arguing there is a surplus of spaces and that parts of the 36-bed home are not fit for purpose.

A coach was hired to take campaigners to the council’s Ty Penallta headquarters in Ystrad Mynach from Risca.

Opposition to the council plan is fierce with protesters angry that the nearest council-run care home is Newbridge’s Ty Iscoed and that any potential move for residents could be detrimental to their health.

Risca West councillor Dave Rees, who recently left the Labour Party in a row over the selection of election candidates for Islwyn, is supporting the protesters.

Campaigners have called a public meeting to discuss the closure to be held at 7pm on March 21 at Risca Rugby Club.

They have also started a petition to save the home which can be signed at www.dontevictus.com
