Tory AM calls for train station disabled access improvements

South Wales East regional Assembly Member William Graham has called for better disabled facilities at train stations across the region.

Speaking in an Assembly debate on rail infrastructure in Wales, Conservative AM Mr Graham said there was a need to improve facilities for disabled passengers.

He said: “Never again can we have a repeat of the situation when a new platform is opened at a major rail hub without wheelchair access, as happened when platform four was opened at Newport Rail Station in 2007.

“No railway station in South Wales East has both disabled access to all platforms and accessible lavatory facilities.”

In Caerphilly County Borough, disabled access to train stations have long been considered inadequate by passengers.

To access the Rhymney-bound platform at Caerphilly train station for example, people have to take a long detour from the bus terminus across Mountain Road and down a slope.
