Mother of Cwmcarn abandoned baby arrested

Police have arrested the mother of a newborn baby boy who was found dead at the rear of a Spar shop.

A woman in her 20s from Risca was arrested on suspicion of concealment of a birth after a police made a public appeal for information after the baby was discovered more than a week ago.

The baby boy, who was named Patrick by investigating officers, was pronounced dead in hospital after being found in a lane off Newport Road, in Cwmcarn.

A spokesman for Gwent Police said: “Following the discovery of a newborn baby boy in Cwmcarn on Thursday March 18 officers have now located the baby’s mother.

“The female, in her 20s from the Risca area, was seen by medical professionals and spoken to by officers.

“She and her family are being supported by specially trained officers.

“The female has been arrested on suspicion of concealment of a birth and has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

“Police would like to thank the community and the media for their support and assistance throughout the investigation.”
