Pupils from Bryn Primary School celebrate after winning the top recycling prize.

Green pupils from across the Caerphilly County Borough have been rewarded for helping to recycle thousands of copies of Yellow Pages directories.

Caerphilly County Borough Council launched its Yellow Pages Schools Recycling Scheme back in December.

In total 37 schools took part in the competition and together they helped collect nearly 3,000 directories for recycling.

A special awards presentation took place last week to announce the top three schools that have collected the most Yellow Pages.

These are:

1st – Bryn Primary School (Pontllanfraith) – 750 yellow pages

2nd – Derwendeg Primary School (Cefn Hengoed) – 300 yellow pages

3rd – St Gwladys Bargoed School – 270 yellow pages

Bryn Primary received the top prize of £200, Derwendeg won £150 and St Gwladys received £100 for the school.

Councillor Lyn Ackerman, the council’s cabinet member for the environment, said: “I’d like to thank all the schools who took part in this year’s competition for making it such a big success.

“The event teaches children important lessons about sustainability in a fun and engaging way and we hope they will catch the recycling bug and continue with their green efforts in the future.”
