An historic photograph of King George V taken during his visit to Caerphilly in 1912 has been presented to Caerphilly County Borough Council.

The picture will be put on display at the council’s headquarters near Ystrad Mynach.

Olive Evans, the first woman to become chair of Monmouthshire Council in 1994, has donated the picture to the local authority.

Mrs Evans found the picture during a recent clear out of her home.

It was bought by her late husband Gwilym Evans, who spent 45 years as the chairman of Machen.

Mr Evans had bought the picture during a car boot sale and it had been stored at their home for many years.

During 1912 King George V and Queen Mary visited the county borough as a small detour on their trip to the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff.

The Royal couple had expressed a wish to see the social conditions of the area and Sir WT Lewis, later Lord Merthyr, arranged a tour.

Caerphilly county borough mayor John Evans said: “I am delighted that this picture has been given to the authority and would like to extend our thanks to Olive for her generosity in donating it.

“I will ensure the picture is displayed proudly within the offices and aim to find out more about the visit.”

The picture shows King George V and Queen Mary surrounded by men dressed in top hats and tails.
