Nine youngsters from Caerphilly County Borough have been rewarded for their hard work and success in reading.

Secondary schools from the county borough were invited to nominate their ‘Most Improved Boy Readers’ in Years 7 and 8, for an event run by the Schools Library Service.

County Borough Mayor John Evans presented each boy with a certificate and a small gift at a recent ceremony at the council chamber at Penalta House, near Ystrad Mynach.

Author Phil Carradice was also on hand as the special guest and spoke and read poetry to the audience.

Vicki Hyams, from the council’s Schools’ Library Service, said: “The Most Improved Boy Reader competition, which was part of the Read a Million Words Together in Wales campaign, was all about acknowledging the boys hard work and encouraging them for the future.

“I was delighted with the success of the ceremony and want to thank all who attended for their support.”
