Education project set for Risca’s Waun Fawr Brickworks site

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 20:48, Sunday May 9th, 2010.

Councillors have agreed that a former brickworks site in Risca can be used as part of an animal education project for disadvantaged kids.

Caerphilly County Borough Council’s cabinet has decided the former Waun Fawr Brickworks site in Danygraig can be leased to the Lylac Ridge project.

The project’s animal learning centre provides activities for schools, volunteers and organisations interested in learning about the countryside, wildlife and conservation.

The council-owned site was used for landfill in the 1970s and 80s.

The cabinet was told the project’s future was at risk because it could not afford to buy the land it currently leases, which is next to the former brickworks site.

The decision to lease the Waun Fawr has meant the project’s future can now be secured with it paying nominal rent for the use of the land.

The next stage for the land’s new use is to gain planning permission. Councillors have said they will give the project six months to obtain this before discussing other options.
