New community allotment in Bargoed almost ready

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 14:23, Saturday May 15th, 2010.

Green-fingered Bargoed residents are to get a new community allotment.

The Taraggan project will be officially launched on Monday May 24 after two years of planning and fundraising.

The new allotment, next to Bargoed Community Centre, is the work of the local community who wanted an educational allotment space for people of all ages.

The project has transformed derelict land which was once used as a nursery school.

Gilfach Fargoed Tenants and Residents Association, Cleaner Greener Communities and Mentro Allan have all worked tirelessly to make the project a reality.

Taraggan also received funding from Cwm a Mynydd, a rural development fund from Caerphilly County Borough Council to build an Education centre and landscape an unused area on the allotment site.

Radio 2 allotment expert Terry Walton will officially open the allotment at 10.15am on Monday May 24.

John Pritchard, Taraggan’s treasurer, said: “We are delighted that all the plots on the allotment are taken and to see the enthusiasm and motivation of the plot-holders but most importantly the health and social benefits that the plot-holders are getting from working on the Taraggan allotment.”

Mark Ellis, the Greater Bargoed Mentro Allan co-ordinator added: “We never imagined that we could have achieved such a fantastic community asset.

“We are really excited about the opening of the allotment and hope that the community of Gilfach Fargoed and beyond will come to the opening and share in the success of this project with us.”
