A Caerphilly-based food and drink wholesalers has funded a source of clean, free drinking water for a school in Africa through sales of bottled water here in the UK.

TDL Food and Drink, based on the Pontygwindy Industrial Estate, supplies Fairtrade and ethical products to businesses across South Wales.

The company has recently funded a ‘PlayPump’ water system through sales of One Water, giving children at a Malawi school a sustainable source of fresh water.

James Wheeler, managing director of TDL, said: “One Water is an amazing concept – we sell bottles of the water, which comes from a spring in Wales, and included in the price of every bottle is a donation towards building a PlayPump.”

The Mwitere FP School, which has more than 1,000 pupils, has written to the company to thank it for its donation.

In the letter to the company the school’s deputy head states that cases of diarrhoea have dropped by almost 60%.

Mr Wheeler added: “We are eager to fund our next PlayPump and everyone can make a difference by buying One Water instead of another brand, or if you run a shop or café, by selling One Water instead of another brand.”
