A Gwent Police community volunteer has been highly commended for his work in helping to train officers and give them a better understanding of mental health issues.

Wayne Tudball, who has bi-polar disorder, has been a community volunteer with Gwent Police for five years.

He regularly takes part in role play training for probationers and PCSOs and educates officers and staff about his condition.

Wayne, from Oakdale, was presented with his award by Policing Minister Nick Herbert at The Special Constable and Police Support Volunteer Awards 2010, held in London recently.

Wayne, who was pleased to receive the accolade, said: “I work with a number of volunteers and am happy with the recognition for myself and for them.

“Working as a volunteer is of mutual benefit to the force and to volunteers. I enjoy working with the Community Cohesion Team at Gwent Police who are very understanding of the needs of Community Volunteers.”

Jeff Farrar, Assistant Chief Constable of Gwent Police, said: “This is well deserved recognition and I am very grateful to Wayne for his contribution to the training of our officers.

“It undoubtedly helps them gain an understanding of the community they serve. We are extremely grateful for the time and effort made by all our volunteers who help us deliver the best possible service to members of the public.”
