Waunfawr Primary School wins Caerphilly in Bloom

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 08:48, Monday July 12th, 2010.

Waunfawr Primary School, in Cross Keys, has won the Caerphilly in Bloom competition for the third consecutive year.

The competition, which celebrates horticultural achievements in Caerphilly County Borough, named the school as joint 2010 winners, with Deri Primary, after judges still deemed it the best blooming school in the borough.

Head teacher Paul Fowler said: “I said last year, when we won the award for the second time, what a remarkable achievement it was, but to win it three years in a row is unheard of.

“A special thank you has to go out to local residents, Kay and Alan Summerhayes, who have supported the school and its gardening endeavours for many years now.

“With outdoor learning more important than ever before, having a bright and engaging school environment – inside and out – is something we’re very proud of here at Waunfawr Primary.

“In addition to the flower displays and planting that goes on at the school itself, our Forest School at Waunfawr Park gives pupils the opportunity to develop their horticultural skills and knowledge of wildlife further.”

Caerphilly in Bloom judges make decisions based on initial impact, effort, colour co-ordination, weed control, and use of available space.

But schools also have to demonstrate a high level of pupil participation, and incorporation of projects into the national curriculum, through its use in the teaching of subjects, such as science and art.
