Thousands of people from across the county borough, and further afield, will descend on Caerphilly town for the annual Big Cheese Festival this weekend.

Caerphilly County Borough Council has organised a special free bus service operating on Saturday July 24 and Sunday July 25.

Free bus services will pass through a number of towns and villages en route to the Big Cheese site.

Council leader Lindsay Whittle said: “The free bus routes proved very popular last year, and I hope by putting on a similar service again this year we will attract even more people to this fantastic weekend festival.

“The Big Cheese is the pinnacle of our summer events calendar, offering something for everyone, and I would encourage as many people as possible to come along and join in the fun”.

A fancy-dress “Great Cheese Race” will be staged as a highlight of the Big Cheese.

Teams will compete in a relay race which involves transporting a Caerphilly cheese around a course leading to the rear of Caerphilly Castle on a traditional wooden cheese stretcher.

The races start on Friday, July 23, at 6.30pm, on the first day of the three day festival, and will be followed by a fireworks display at 10pm.

The weekend will also feature music, dance, falconry, fire-eating, craft stalls, food halls, comedy and history displays among other attractions.

The free buses will drop off and pick up at the town’s main bus station.

For more information on the free buses or the event itself call 029 2088 0011 or visit the Big Cheese website.

    Hi,

We are TurnerStreet Crash and we are ending the festival this year by playing a set of old 70s, 80s festival rock classics. We all live in and around Newport but also have a lot of family in Caerphilly who will be there to support us and enjoy the weekend. We would just like to say we looking forward to the event and all our fan base from all around Wales and the West base will be there. The weather looks good, the music will be good,,,bring it on!!
