Record attendance for Caerphilly’s Big Cheese 2010

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 20:08, Monday July 26th, 2010.

This year’s Big Cheese Festival in Caerphilly was a record-breaker, according to organisers.

Caerphilly County Borough Council estimate that 85,000 people visited the festival site over the weekend – but admitted this was a “conservative” figure.

Councillor Ron Davies, cabinet member for regeneration and countryside, said: “The Big Cheese Festival is the pinnacle of Caerphilly County Borough Council’s summer festival programme, and has grown in popularity so much over the years, really helping to put Caerphilly on the map.

“I would like to thank everyone that came along to join in the fun, as well as our sponsors for the event whose continued support helped make this year’s event such an overwhelming success.”

The action kicked off on Friday evening with the Cheese Race, followed by a spectacular fireworks display over Caerphilly Castle.

Saturday and Sunday saw the fun continue with an extravaganza of street entertainers, craft, information and food stalls.

There was also living history encampments, music, dance, comedy and a huge funfair.

The focus switches to Blackwood next month with a brand new event at Blackwood Showfields called ‘Kite Night’.

The action will start on Friday August 20 when international kite fliers will fill the sky with their spectacular kites, followed by an exciting fireworks finale.

The following two days will then see the Bedwellty Show at the showfields.

The new programme of events at Blackwood Showfields replaces the scrapped Big Balloon Festival.
