Bid to protect Caerphilly Cheese under European naming rules

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 14:00, Wednesday July 28th, 2010.

Caerphilly Cheese, the best there is!

Caerphilly Cheese could be protected under European rules in the same way as Champagne.

Champagne can only be called Champagne if it has been made in the Champagne province in France.

The Welsh Assembly has made £75,000 available in a bid to increase the number of Welsh foods granted European Protected Geographical Indication status in the next two years.

Caerphilly AM Jeff Cuthbert has welcomed the plan to protect Caerphily Cheese.

He said: “Anyone who has seen me speak knows that I often mention Caerphilly Cheese and never
miss a chance to promote it. I am absolutely thrilled that it may be considered for PGI status.

“The cheese is a wonderful part of our heritage in Caerphilly – and a delicious one at that. I
would encourage the consideration of several of our excellent Welsh beers and ciders which
also just so happen to complement the cheese very well.”

In February Caerphilly MP Wayne David promised to give a piece of Caerphilly Cheese to the Speaker of the House of Commons after the delicacy was discussed during a political debate.
