Residents living in houses belonging to housing association Shaw Healthcare have been saved from losing their homes.
The housing association had wanted to sell their properties in Llanfabon Drive, Trethomas, and Bryn Dolwen in Bedwas but after a meeting with council officials, it has been persuaded to rethink the plans.
Councillor Ron Davies, cabinet member for regeneration and countryside and local councillor for Bedwas, Trethomas and Machen, said: “Local people had been in touch with me to raise their real concerns about their situation if these homes were sold by Shaw’s, a charitable organisation, to a private landlord.
“Many of these people could not afford to buy their homes and so were facing a very uncertain future. I am so pleased we were able to influence Shaw Healthcare Homes’ mind about this matter.”
Veteran Labour councillor Ray Davies had also campaigned for the former coal board houses to be saved from a sell-off by writing to the association.
Caerphilly’s Labour MP Wayne David welcomed the announcement by Shaw Healthcare.
He said: “This is a great success for local tenants who made a stand. Tenants in Bedwas and Trethomas were prepared to stand-up and be counted, and have achieved a significant change of position by Shaw Healthcare.
“A meeting has been arranged with the Welsh Assembly Government’s Housing Minister for the third week in September. Residents and their local representatives now need to take stock of the situation and decide whether to proceed with this meeting.”
Shaw Healthcare has said it would consider selling the homes to a registered social landlord such as a housing association.
