Hengoed walk to commemorate cartoon legend Gren

Grenfell Jones – or Gren as he was better known to his fans – was a Welsh institution whose popular cartoons of valleys folk entertained the nation for almost 40 years.

Caerphilly County Borough Council is keen to commemorate Gren’s life and work by creating a unique ‘Gren Way’ walking route in and around Hengoed – the village of his birth.

The route will cross the imposing viaduct that spans the valley between Hengoed and Maesycwmmer and it is hoped that a series of artwork pieces reflecting Gren’s many hilarious characters can be developed along the walk.

A special ‘Green Plaque’ will also be erected commemorating Gren’s birthplace at his former home at nearby Brynavon Terrace.

Council leader Lindsay Whittle said: “Gren’s popular characters hold a special place in the nation’s heart – especially in the traditional valleys communities that are reflected in so many of his cartoon strips.

“We thought it would be a fitting tribute to develop this walk through the landscape that inspired some of his most famous creations.”

The walk was officially launched last week with a special event at Hengoed Community Centre.

Life size ‘mock ups’ of various Gren characters were placed across the viaduct to show guests how the final artwork pieces could look.

Local businesses and residents hae the chance to ‘sponsor’ a character and contribute towards the cost of each artwork installation.
